Born in Offenbach in 1957, she now lives in Italy (South Tyrol).
After having accomplished Design studies, she attended a class for craftsman-mastership for ceramics at the Academy in Vienna. Plants and botanical forms and structures have been a central subject in Birgit Neumann´s work ever since. She has been highly influenced by Karl Bloßfeldt who first revealed the architectural qualities of these forms in his book »Urformen der Kunst«. Besides ceramics Birgit Neumann is dedicated to working as web-designer.

The form of this sculpture may seem familiar, because it is modelled on the stem of a common horsetail (»equisetum«). Typical features are the intersecting segments. Photography offers a prototype for such enlargements from the plant world: the plant photographs of Karl Bloßfeldt, which were made to document a teaching collection. The ceramicist Birgit Neumann believes clay to be a particularly suitable material for working with vegetation themes: »Both are things that are provided by the earth. I could not have made these things out of any other material.«
